Well it’s here! CHERRIES! Cherry season has begun – they are ready from now until early August in the Central Okanagan. So what types of cherries are grown in the Okanagan?

And where do you pick them? There are several U-pick orchards in Kelowna – Arndt Orchards is a popular one – click on the name to be taken to their web page with directions and opening times.

What do you do with your cherries? Lots of recipes online but here are some of our favourites
Ingredients for the Crust:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup flour
- 2 tbsp icing sugar
Ingredients for the Filling:
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp . baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups fresh local cherries , pitted and quartered
- 1/2 tsp . vanilla
- 1/4 tsp . salt
- 1 cup local walnuts , chopped
Instructions for the Crust:
Cut 1/2 cup butter into 1 cup flour mixed with 2 tbsp icing sugar
Press into 9×9 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes
Instructions for the Filling:
Combine eggs, sugar, flour and baking powder
Add cherries, vanilla, salt, walnuts
Spread mixture atop crust; bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
To double recipe use 9×13 pan

And of course you can’t miss Mike & Lizzy;s Cherry U-Pick that is right on Lakeshore Road – at 4801 Lakeshore Place to be exact – you can grab a bucket and pick cherries like they have done for generations! Established in 1948 this orchard has some of the most beautiful lake views in town – it’s a great place to take out of town guests or just enjoy an afternoon with the family.
What ever you decide to do – enjoy the cherries – they won’t last long – then we are on to the PEACHES! Yummmmmmm
